On a fast road bike, bar tape is part of the cockpit feel. The performance question is not simply how much padding you can add: it is how much road feedback you want through your hands. AMS Tessel offers two thicknesses built around the same distinctive tessellated grip pattern.
Race feedback or performance comfort?
- Tessel 1.8 mm — the most direct option for riders who prioritise a close connection with the bar during hard efforts, technical descents and racing.
- Tessel 2.5 mm — a balanced option for fast training, long club rides and race-oriented riders who still want more cushioning.
What changes with thickness?
The 1.8 mm tape has an approximately 2.3 mm installed feel; the 2.5 mm option feels approximately 3.0 mm, depending on stretch and overlap. Both use a textured PU surface with an EVA base and non-adhesive gel-based backing, combining secure grip with controlled vibration damping.
Is thinner bar tape automatically faster?
No. A thinner wrap can provide a more immediate sense of feedback, but thickness alone does not make a rider faster. Your preference for direct control versus cushioning is what determines the right Tessel for your bike.
