What does an AMS Crank Defender protect against?

AMS Crank Defenders shield crank arms from scratches, rock strikes, and impacts encountered on rough terrain. 

Are Crank Defenders compatible with carbon cranks?

Yes , they are designed to work with most carbon cranks.  They also are compatible with some aluminum cranks, depending on model.

Do they add noticeable weight to the bike?

No, AMS states that their Crank Defenders are light and do not absorb water or mud, so any weight addition is minimal. Just 18 grams (0.63oz)

How do I install AMS Crank Defenders? Do I need tools?

You generally need to remove the pedals first (using an Allen hex wrench) so you can slide on the defenders.  Then align them properly, push them into place, and reinstall the pedals (with clean threads). Check our installation instructions. 

Can they be removed without leaving marks or residue?

Yes. Because they’re made of a flexible TPU material and are tightly fitted, they don’t leave adhesive or residue behind. 

Will they fit both MTB and e-MTB cranksets?

They are generally compatible with many cranksets including those for MTB, and AMS even recommends combining Crank Defenders with their crank guards for maximum protection.  The compatibility list includes some e-drive cranks. So in many cases, yes, but you should check your exact crank model against AMS’s compatibility list.

You can check our compatibility list to verify the ones we’ve tested compatibility on.  The crank defenders are very easy to install; simply uninstall your pedals with your Allen hex wrench as required and slide the defenders in making sure they are straightened and well-positioned.
